The Total Solar Eclipse Path

The first point of contact of the Moon’s shadow with the Earth`s surface occurs north east of the Kakadu National Park, in a line extending northeast of Ubirr Rock. The shadow travels east across Arnhem Land, crosses into the Gulf of Carpentaria coast at the north end of Blue Mud Bay. It strikes land again on Cape York Peninsula near Wallaby Island. The centreline crosses the Eastern coast 30km north of Cairns about halfway between Cairns and Port Douglas. After that it crosses Green Island before heading south east across the Pacific where it doesn’t touch land again.

Total Solar Eclipse Port Douglas 2012

Total Solar Eclipse Port Douglas 2012

The 2012 total eclipse can be seen along the coast from a 140 km wide path. The path crosses the coast at an angle so that the 140km wide path covers a 200km swathe of coastline between Innisfail in the south to Cedar Bay National Park about half way between Cape Tribulation and Cooktown. Outside this area, a partial eclipse only will be visible. Just outside the total path, for example south Innisfail, a 99.9% partial eclipse is visible. Be in no doubt, a 99.9% partial eclipse is not almost the same as the spectacle of a total eclipse. If you live near the edge of the path, get in the car and drive into the path of totality. Anywhere between Gordonvale and Port Douglas on or near the coast are the best places to see the eclipse. The duration is longest in this area. The total part of the eclipse lasts for two spectacular minutes anywhere between Cairns and Port Douglas. To the north and south, duration gets progressively shorter and shorter until, near the southern and northern limits, it only lasts for a few seconds. For folks living in or near Innisfail, watch from at least 20km north of Innisfail say Babinda or Bramston Beach to get a decent duration of about 1m 20s.

Don’t miss out on this event, book your Port Douglas accommodation today for this great celestial event.

Port Douglas Accommodation

We have been quite busy here at Shantara Resort Port Douglas over the last few months with work being done around the Resort including retiling around the BBQ area and staining our timber decks to a rich mahogany colour. We have also undertaken a soft refurbishment of our rooms which include bright scatter cushions and matching bed runners, new comfy modular lounges and pillows, hand woven rugs from India to suit the new decor, reupholstered the dining room chairs, colourful prints of our natural surroundings taken by a local photographic artist and installed DVD players to the Studio rooms. We have also added a second TV in the bedrooms of the Apartments which is nice for lazy mornings in bed. Even though we are still fairly young it is nice to keep up with changing trends. Hopefully you can come and see for yourself and enjoy the new and glowing Shantara Resort.

Salutations from beautiful Port Douglas….we look forward to seeing you soon.

Perfect Port Douglas Honeymoon Accommodation

My husbund and I stayed at the Shantara in December for our Port Douglas Honeymoon. We had previously spent a month driving up the East Coast in a campervan and Port Douglas was our last stop. The Hotel is in a really good location just literally a 5 minute walk to the beach and a 5 minute walk in to the town. We had a room with direct access in to the pool which was great.

The hotel also had communal bbq’s which were great for cooking on if you fancied a cheap night in. The restaurants in Port Douglas are quite expencive to eat out, however we had a meal at Billys by the Sea for New Year’s Eve and it was one of the best meals we have ever had.

The rooms at the Shantara Port Douglas Accommodation are really nicely decorated and have everything you need. The Shantara also gave us a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine for our honeymoon which was a lovely gesture.

I would definately return to the Shantara and cannot wait until I can return to Australia as one of the best places I have travelled too.
